Content Writing
Content is king. With high quality and descriptive content, your readers and search engines can understand in detail what you do, and how you can help your customers.
What is Content Writing?
Content writing is the written text that is displayed on your website, social media pages, or any digital media that represents your business. Content writing is not only a means to tell your customers about your products and services, but its also a strategic way to inform Google and other search engines about what keywords they should rank your website for, and in most cases what areas to rank you in.
You see, when you search for something on Google, Google checks its index for webpages that suit the keywords/keywords that you searched. How Google finds webpages within its index is by sending out billions of ‘’crawlers’’ to websites that have been submitted to them, and reads all of the content on each website. Once all of the content has been written (and other factors taken into consideration), Google will then know what website to provide users when searching for various search terms. For this reason, its particularly important that the content that you write for your website is descriptive, easy to read and is of the highest quality.
Content Writing Basics
Having quality content on your website is, according to Google, the most important element of SEO. High quality content tells your visitors exactly what your business or website is about, and provides information about the services you provide. With quality and strategic content writing, your website will be able to rank very high for the keywords you have in your SEO plan. In short, good quality content provides a great user experience, and for that reason (amongst others), Google is more likely to rank your website higher than your competitors who have not so good content.
Content writing also allows you to implement the keywords that you selected in the keyword planning step. Sure, anyone can write 2000 words about their business and what they do, but its important that in the content that is being written, the keywords are incorporated organically, so you attract the traffic that you are aiming for.
Your customers, and Google, only know what you tell them. And the way you tell them what you want them to know is through the content that you write. Google nor your customers assume anything when it comes to reading your website. For example, if you are an electrician in Sydney, and you provide level 2 services (which relates to work on the public electricity poles etc), your content can’t just say that you do level 2 electrical work. You need to explain in quite a bit of detail what exactly a level 2 electrician does, why someone would need one, and so on. With quality content writing for your SEO plan, you need to be as detailed as possible in describing your products and services, without writing an encyclopedia which bores the reader, and they leave your website.
Make headlines that intrigue your readers
With a headline or title, you don’t have very much space to make a big impression, so when writing the headline for your content, make it a good one. The quality of your headline can determine if a reader will click back and leave your website or continue on to read more. This also applies to your meta description. Your meta description is the snippet of text that readers will see when they see your website in the SERP. In saying this, its very important that this reads well and attracts your potential customer to click to read more.
Write for your target audience, not for search engines
When writing content for your website, you must write it in a way that your readers will want to see, not what you think search engines will favour. This is a common mistake that people new to SEO do, they will try and write content in a way that ‘’tricks’’ search engines into ranking them higher. One of the most popular methods people use is stuffing their content with the same keyword over and over. This doesn’t help. Google and other search engines have developed some very highly sophisticated algorithms that can read content that is meant for a human, and determine with a high level of accuracy if this content is relevant to certain keywords. More importantly, you want your content to keep your reader interested, so write it accordingly.
Structure your content in a way that’s easy for the reader to follow
When writing content for your website, you will hear that it’s a good idea to have around 2,000 words or more for it to provide value for your readers (and SEO purposes). This is a very open-ended statement, and it can be true in some circumstances, but in others its not required. In any event, if you decide to write 2000 words of content or more, you don’t want to do so in 1 piece of text without any kinds of breaks or sub headings. Its recommended that you have some kind of hierarchy in the content, beginning with an introduction of what the page is about, and listing the products or services in a neat and easy to read format. Think about this; if you are looking for an electrician to install a new smoke alarm, and your happen to come across a website for a local electrician, would you prefer to read through 2,000 words of text with no paragraph breaks or sub headings, or be able to scroll down until you see the sub heading for smoke alarms, and read only what’s relevant to what you’re looking for? By making your content well structured and easy to read for your customers, you are more likely to have them make contact with you.
