Keyword Planning

By selecting the right keywords to target at the beginning, you save a lot of headaches in the future and maximise your SEO results

What is Keyword Planning?

With any SEO plan, you are going to need to know what keywords your campaign is targeting. Although this seems quite straight forward and easy, keyword planning can be a very complex process. If done incorrectly, and you have selected keywords that are not completely suited to your SEO goal, then the results of your campaign may be quite disappointing. However if you have done your keyword planning correctly, then you will maximise your websites exposure to the right demographic, maximising results.

Keyword planning allows you to see what people are actually searching for, rather than just guess (or ask your friends what they would search for). This process can be very informative, as you can find surprising trends and patterns within different cities in the same country. For example, if you are an electrician in Sydney, the keyword with the highest search volume might be ‘’electrician Sydney’’. In Melbourne however, the keyword with the highest volume might be ‘’electrical service provider Melbourne’’, and not ‘’electrician Melbourne’’.

Keyword Planning Tools Available

Keyword planning will also allow you to find keywords that you have never even thought of, through some of the complex tools available. Some of these tools include Ahrefs, Semrush or even Google’s keyword planner.

Ahrefs and Semrush are great tools for keyword planning, as they have lots of suggested keywords from their own databases which you can utilise in your own SEO plan. These tools however are not cheap, and have a high monthly cost to use. SEO agencies such as Extension Group use Ahrefs and Semrush, as we require some of the other features that these tools have to monitor hundreds of clients ranking positions simultaneously.

Google’s Keyword Planner has some drawdowns, such as its very vague search volume for keywords that it suggests (which is at odds with Ahrefs and Semrush which provide an estimated and more accurate monthly search volume). This keyword planning tool is more for users who are only doing an SEO plan for their own website, as there is no cost to use this tool.
