Website Audit

A website audit can help you identify issues with your website, and assist in building an SEO plan that will grow your business in the years to come.

What is a Website Audit?

One of the most important steps in providing an effective SEO plan is to know what we are working with in the beginning, and audit your website. By auditing your website, we can see where you are currently positioned in various keyword searches, see any errors or issues on your website that needs to be fixed, and also find opportunities to improve your rankings overall.

A website audit can be broken up into 2 parts. A technical audit, and an on page SEO audit. Some of the tasks completed when doing a website audit will include:

Technical Audit Factors (off page)

  • Internal Page Issues: this part of the audit helps understand which pages are missing, have errors and so on. These include pages that return a timed out response, 500 page, 5XX page, 404 or other kind of error.

  • Indexability: This part of the audit will tell you whether or not certain pages on your website can actually be indexed by Google. If your pages or website is not indexed, then it will not be found on any search enquiries.

  • Link Profile: By auditing your website, you can see what your current link profile is like, which will help determine your websites level of authority. The be able to rank well on searches in Google, your website will need good quality backlinks, so if in the audit you can see that you don’t have many, you will be able to add more in your SEO plan.

  • Redirect Chains: In your audit you will need to know if you have too many redirect, and if so, you can have this rectified in your SEO plan. Its ok to have 301 redirects for example, however if you have a redirect going to another redirect, which goes to another one and so on, that can seriously effect your SEO in the future.

On-Page SEO Factors

  • Meta Description Tag: If you have empty meta description tags, this is something that will need to be rectified in your SEO plan. A meta description tag is the snippet of text that you read when you do a google search, and it provides a small summary of what the page is about. It allows the reader to know whether or not they want to actually click on your website in the search results. If this is well written, it helps your website get more clicks when people make online searches.

  • Word Count: Content for SEO is of paramount importance, and if your website has a low word count, then this is something that will need to be fixed. If your website has a low word count, or also known as ‘’thin content’’, then it is hard for Google to be able to understand in great detail what your business is about, and therefore cannot rank you high in the SERP.

  • H Tags: The content in your website needs to be labelled with certain H tags so search engines can read it properly. For example, the title of your website, or the text in the banner at the top of your page is generally a H1 tag. Following that, smaller sections down the page will have H2 tags, H3 and so on. These need to be in order and correct, otherwise Google and other search engines wont be able to understand your website properly.

  • Social Tags: If your business has a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or other social media account, this needs to be linked to your website. On the website audit, you will be able to see if this is the case, and if not, fixing this can also be added to your SEO plan.
